I ran into this again last year when a client asked me to source a “Sumitomo Electric graphene electrode.” The first page of results included wire harnesses, mining announcements, and general news about the Sumitomo Group. It took me about an hour to find the right product page. I kept landing in the wrong place because I was relying on the name instead of the exact product line.
This was not a big financial mistake. The big cost was time. But it taught me the same lesson: the brand name is not a specification. It's a starting point.
Case 3: A Dewalt air compressor and the CFM lesson

Where this checklist won't save you
To be fair, verification isn't the only thing that matters. Sometimes the right part is in stock but the lead time is too long. Sometimes the supplier is impossible to reach. And sometimes you have to choose between a part that's available now and a part that's correct but unavailable for six weeks. The checklist can't fix that.
It also won't protect you from a supplier that sends damaged goods or a shipping company that loses a box. Those are different problems with different solutions. But ordering the wrong thing is the most expensive problem because it includes the cost of the part, the cost of the delay, and the cost of your credibility.
If you're a small buyer, don't apologize for small orders. I still remember the vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously when I was starting out. They're the ones I call now for $20,000 orders. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.
Bottom line: check the part number. Check the serial number. Check the specs. And if you're folding a paper crane, don't skip step one.
